Johnny Chiu, GSAPP 06', won the Best of year awards from Interior Design Magazine New York

Congratulates to Johnny Chiu Columbia GSAPP 06' for his latest design award in the US: The best winner of U.S.A. The Best of year awards from Interior Design Magazine New York. Johnny Chiu has won in total 11 International Architecture and Interior design awards in 2016, including American Architecture Prize, Japan Good Design, China's I-ding International Design award, INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, Japan's JCD, Taiwan Golden Pin Design, and the fourth place of Tainan Baseball competition. 
Johnny Chiu founded J.C. Architecture 柏成設計 in Taipei since 2010, with division offices now in New York, his's creativity operates JCArchitecture as a studio think tank, developing, researching and experimenting methodologies for new design possibilities. He is also the founder with Yenling Chen (GSAPP alumni) for OUT Travel Scholarship, promoting design exploration for Taiwanese students to see the world. He is also a board member of CAA Taipei.

Tieh-Chih Chang 張鐵志 launched his new book: The Era of Burning

Tieh-Chih Chang is an active critic in culture and politics, and his articles are widely distributed among the mainstream media and international media’s Chinese networks in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. He has been keen on experimenting new media experiments in his long-term practice. 

Tieh-Chih Chang is a PhD candidate in Political Science, Columbia University. He has been giving lectures in Tsing Hua University, National Taipei University of Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong, etc. He is also the author of Sounds and Fury: Can Rock & Roll Change the World?, The sounds of resistance : from Bob Dylan to U2, etc.

Columbia Dedicates New Manhattanville Campus

On October 24, President Lee C. Bollinger led a ceremony attended by distinguished faculty, deans, and students, as well as local civic and community leaders and internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano of Renzo Piano Building Workshop, which designed the campus master plan with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Piano also designed the first buildings to rise on the campus: the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, which houses the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, and the Lenfest Center for the Arts.

SIPA Alumna Cathy Yang 楊文琪 awarded as CTBUH Fellow 2016

Congratulations to CAA Taipei board member and the former President, Cathy Yang (SIPA), for being recognized as the 2016 Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) fellow for her contribution to the Council over an extended period of time, and in recognition of her work and the sharing of her knowledge in the design and construction of tall buildings and the urban habitat. 恭喜楊文琪理事(前會長)榮獲此項殊榮!

Cathy Yang is currently the head of the commercial company of Shanghai Tower. Before joining Shanghai Tower, she had been in charge of TAIPEI 101’s operation for 15 years.

CAA Taiwan Board hosted a welcome dinner for the Director of Weatherhead East Asian Institute Dr. Eugenia Lean and Law School Professor Ben Liebman. The guests include Dr. Douglas Hsu (MA, Economics), Chair and CEO of Far Eastern Group, and Mr. Huang Ching-Lung (Fellow, WEAI), President of Want Daily among others. It is a night of intellectual debates with alumni on wide range of issues. Dr. Lean also met Taipei Mayor Ko at his office this afternoon and discussed further cooperation between the city government and the insitute.

大魯閣草衙道「不只是個購物中心!」 Taroko launches new Kaohsiung shopping center by Chairman Jeff Tsai, GSAPP '96

The grand opening of Taroko Park (大魯閣草衙道) , Taiwan's first shopping center and sports-themed amusement park hybrid kicked off in Kaohsiung on Monday, May 9 2016 with Kaohsiung Madame Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊), Taroko Group Chairman Columbia Alum Jeff Tsai (蔡明璋, GSAPP '96), and many more attending the festivities and touring the park's major attractions.

“Taroko Park’s entertainment and shopping offerings are expected to attract 12 million visitors annually,” Taroko Development Chairman Jeff Tsai said last week, adding that the mall is also expected to generate about 5,000 jobs in Kaohsiung, as well as boost ridership of the city’s metro system by 6 million.

大魯閣開發董事長蔡明璋表示,2016年5月9日開幕的草衙道是第一個以賽車及運動休閒為主題,目標成為全亞洲最好玩的購物中心,藉由運動、休閒等娛樂設施吸引人潮,加上位於捷運站等交通優勢,預估年入場人次上看1200萬人。蔡董事長畢業於哥倫比亞大學建築研究所,目前為哥大校友會理事。

Columbia Professor de Bary Named as 2016 Tang Prize Laureate for Sinology

第二屆唐獎漢學獎 授予儒學泰斗狄百瑞

2016唐獎「漢學獎」頒予美國哥倫比亞大學榮譽教授、中國思想史泰斗狄百瑞(William Theodore de Bary)教授,表彰其為儒家思想研究所作的貢獻與影響,他對儒家思想每有同情的理解與闡掦,也不乏誠懇的批評,功在國際儒學的研究,可謂一代漢學巨擘。

美國的狄百瑞教授曾兼任哥倫比亞大學副校長和東方語文系主任、國防語言及地區研究中心的首位主任,是西方儒學的開創性人物,對舉世儒學有卓著貢獻,著作宏富,近七十年的學術生涯中,編寫近三十冊書,其中有許多部具有突破性的貢獻。

In a press conference from its office in Taiwan, the Tang Prize announced today (June 20) the 2016 Tang Prize in Sinology, which is the study of China and its related fields. William Theodore de Bary, Professor Emeritus of Columbia University, was named as the sole recipient this year “for his pioneering contributions in Confucian studies.”

The announcement was made by former Academia Sinica President and 1986 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Yuan Tseh Lee. A table of experts in the field of Sinology, ranging from literature to history and linguistics, joined him to witness and speak on the accomplishments of Professor de Bary. This included Current Acting President of the Academia Sinica Wang Fan-sen, Academicians David Der-Wei Wang, Yusheng Lin, William S.-Y. Wang, Chin-shing Huang, and Research Fellow at the Academia Sinica Sher-shiueh Li. Tang Prize Foundation CEO Jenn-Chuan Chern delivered the opening remarks to the historical event.

David Der-Wei Wang, in his introduction to de Bary’s 70-plus-year career, noted that de Bary has been involved in the editing, writing, and translating of more than 100 classics and books of his own. His 1960 Sources of Chinese Tradition was cited by many of the experts present as a seminal and foundational work. This compilation of translations and annotations of Chinese classics has remained a mainstay of Sinological studies for over 50 years, and has offered a thorough portrayal of different aspects of the social, political, intellectual, and cultural traditions of China to students in the English-speaking world.
